Referee’s Meeting – July 17th 2002
Royal Motel – Vacaville, CA
Meeting called to order at 7:35 by president Eddie Diaz
Correspondence: Glenn Martinson is setting up a golf day on August 10th as a fundraiser for our ISDE riders this year. Start time is 8 a.m. Forest Lake Golf Course in Acampo (same course as last year). This year we are supporting Darrick Merrill, Brian Sperle, and John Wells.
Cross Country: Eddia Diaz reported:
- We finally might have found ourselves a new steward.
- The points are almost all caught up except for the work points.
Enduro: Alan Plumbridge reported:
- No events since last meeting.
- Shasta has no access to riding areas except in preregistered groups that may cross all at once.
- The points for the series are on the web site now.
Dirt Track: Ralph Lee reported:
- Our district riders did well in the Amateur Nationals.
- Motowest canceled the July 27th event.
- Motowest has an event on September 7th at Lodi.
- Looking at getting Newman facility this year, lots of work needed to the track.
LAO:
- KFBK radio station played a Blue Ribbon 30 second radio commercial in Sacramento talking about Boxer closing our trails.
- Recreation advocates from across CA. Converged on July 11th on the steps of the Capitol and at Senator Boxer’s Offices throughout the state to protest the California Wild Heritage Wilderness Act of 2002. Boxer’s Wilderness proposal is just the latest effort used to eliminate mechanical access on public lands.
- El Dorado- The El Dorado County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday not to support legislation that would ban mountain bikes, snowmobiles and dirt bikes form popular trails at Meiss Meadows and the Caples Creek area.
- Off-road vehicle supporters filed suit on the 12th in federal court in Fresno challenging the Bureau of Land Management’s decision to ban the vehicles from more than a million acres of CA desert. Eleven organizations joined the complaint charging that the closures violated federal laws by not allowing public review and comment before the bureau’s decision was made. The land in question covers much of the Mojave’s desert region and includes federal, state and private acreage. It was supposed to be a temporary closing while the BLM developed new plans for the area, but it is not know when the final plans will be finished.
Sanctioning: Dave Picket reported:
- The owner of Vallejo Speedway Steve Hazelton has approached the district about doing some events at his track on Sundays. He currently runs karts and mini program on Sat’s. Check out his website at vallejospeedway2.com.
- If you need supplies from AMA, make your orders now.
- Out of State stickers will not be available from the district anymore once they run out.
New Business:
- Don Link passed away last week. Joined Polka Dots in 1955. He was known for developing the flip cards at enduros that eventually spred nationally.
- Next year is Lodi’s Cycle Bowl 50th season. Looking to do a Sunday event sometime in April. We are looking for some sponsorship to help celebrate the 50th season at the Cycle Bowl which opened to racing in 1954 and has ran 50 years of consecutive race seasons.
Good of Body:
- AT the Funky Chicken National Hare Scrambles our district had 7 riders in the top 10.
- Timmy Stowe had a big crash at Hangtown’s motocross track and has some damage to his teeth. Brian Sperle also took a big spill at Hangtown and then again at the Funky Chicken. Best wishes for both to get better soon.
